First off to really understand Search Engine Optimization you first have to understand what in the world a Search Engine is in the first place. There’s also a big secret out there about people that needs to be explored. People use Search Engines, whether its Google,Yahoo,or Live.com as Address Bars. The majority of humans are just dumb. Search Engines cater to dumb people. Let’s talk about the various working parts of a Search Engine.

What Makes Up A Crawling Search Engine

There are lots of of search engines, directory and what not. What I’m going to focus on is the crawling search engine such as Google,Yahoo, and Live.com. Here are the working parts of these search engines.

1. the bots
The bots, or spiders are what help gather the information. They go out onto your website and your datafeeds such as XML and RSS files and gather information about your site. They collect all the relevant data based on your authority and send it back to the mothership. The more authority you have the deeper it will search and the more data it will harvest. This is commonly called the sandboxing effect. No authority = No deep digging.

2. the index
The index is where the Mothership organizes the data that her little baby search bots have harvested. Again this is based on many authority factors that we will go into depth later. The index is a constantly shifting movement based on a few factors including authority, rate of content production, and the shifting of outbound and inbound authority, also factors that make the index shift includes public demand for information, and relevancy of said information being sought. Information is stored in a variety of ways primarily based on what is known as a reverse index or based on keywords and keyword phrases in reverse order again based on authority.

3. the interface
The interface is the search apparatus that is generally used by the public in order to look items up in the index. In recent times interface gateways have been added to all browsers in order to drive traffic to the major Search Engines. Information is retrieved based on the Search Engines individual algorithm and the information it retrieves from the index.

All of this sounds complicated and it really is. But what is important is to understand that all data is not equal.
That’s the key part of search at this point. Search Engine Optimization is a rapidly changing industry largely because of the growing field of image search, maps search, video search, and text based search. As a publisher you have to be very savvy to understand how important SEO is to your business. If you arent you will find yourself becoming irrelevant.

Understanding SEO should not be a prayer.

David, this was very, very helpful. I’ve never really understood in any detail what SEO is, and your description helps bring things into focus for me. I’ve been absorbing your thoughts on all this web development stuff, and I actually am starting to get a better handle on the various things that go into building a site and making it grow. You’re an excellent teacher. :-)
